Leaving Virginia: The Start of the Trail
We rolled out of Virginia with the car packed, cameras ready, and a loose plan to chase both natural beauty and wooden folklore. The early miles were quiet, the kind of peaceful stretch that lets anticipation build. By the time we crossed into North Carolina, the trip had already taken on a life of its own.
North Carolina: The Hunt Begins
Our first mission was in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the hunt for Thomas Dambo’s trolls officially kicked off. Hidden in parks and tucked into green spaces, these towering sculptures — crafted from recycled wood — turned the city into a playful scavenger map. Each troll felt like a character from a forgotten storybook: expressive, mischievous, and larger than life. Finding them wasn’t just sightseeing; it was an adventure. The gallery captures those moments of discovery — rounding a bend to see a troll peeking through the trees or stumbling upon one lounging as if it had been waiting for us all along.
Crossing Into Tennessee: Mountains, Music, and Magic
From Raleigh, we headed west toward Tennessee, watching the landscape rise and fold into the foothills of the Smokies. Our first stop: Gatlinburg, a lively mountain town where the smell of fudge and the sound of bluegrass spill into the streets. The gallery shows the charm of Gatlinburg’s storefronts, its busy walkways, and the gateway it provides to one of America’s most beloved national parks.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Mist and Majesty
Inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the world slowed down. The ridgelines rolled out in layers of blue and gray, the kind of views that feel both ancient and endless. We wandered through quiet trails, stopped at overlooks wrapped in mist, and watched sunlight break through the trees like something out of a painting. The photos from this stretch of the trip are some of the most atmospheric — sweeping vistas, textured forests, and the soft haze that gives the Smokies their name.

A Visit with Dolly: Sevier County’s Heart
Before leaving Tennessee, we made a pilgrimage to the Dolly Parton statue outside the Sevier County Courthouse. It’s a simple bronze figure, but standing before it feels like meeting the spirit of the Smokies themselves — creative, generous, and deeply rooted in the region’s identity. The gallery includes this moment as a tribute to the woman whose music and legacy echo through every corner of the county.
A Gallery of Story and Discovery
From Virginia’s quiet roads to North Carolina’s troll‑filled parks, and finally to Tennessee’s mountain peaks and cultural landmarks, this trip became a tapestry of adventure. The photo gallery reflects that journey — not just the places we visited, but the feeling of chasing something magical across state lines.
It’s a story of landscapes and legends, of art made from reclaimed wood, and of the joy that comes from discovering something extraordinary in unexpected places.
